Q & A
What can I do for the Downy Brome that is coming up in my wheat?

by Jim Gleason, Regional Vice President
St. John, Kan.

There are two chemicals on the market that can be sprayed over the top of the emerged wheat crop to work on Downy Brome, Japanese Brome and Cheat. Maverick®, by Monsanto, has been used for several years. Olympus®, by Bayer, was recently labeled and is available for use this fall.

Both products have given 85% to nearly 100% control of Downy Brome, Japanese Brome and Cheat when applied in the fall in various university trials. The control is dramatically less when applied in the spring. Either chemical will provide good control of mustards and other winter annual broadleaves.

The main difference between these products is the re-cropping restrictions for grain sorghum and corn. You may want to ask your Crop Quest agronomist about these chemicals to see if they will fit your situation.
