Harvest Update
Dwight Koops, Regional Vice President
Fall harvest has progressed slowly across the High Plains through the early part of October mainly due to
the wet weather over the past few weeks. This has allowed most of the feedlots to fill their needs of
high moisture grain.
Corn silage yields were higher than average this year. It is common to find fields yielding 30+ tons per acre.
Early irrigated corn yields are very solid. The wet summer has allowed even the fields under smaller wells to yield very well.
Corn is drying slowly, but with a few sunny days, harvest will be in full swing.
The grain sorghum still needs some warm weather to finish maturing. There are still numerous fields that are
very green. The early planted milo should also finish well. Some fields will need a later than normal freeze in
order to finish without losing significant test weight. We should see average to above average grain sorghum
yields this fall.
It appears that soybean yields will be about average. Some fields have yielded very well, but many fields
are average to below average. The recent wet weather has delayed soybean maturity and harvest, which will
probably reduce the yield of the later beans.
Most of the sunflowers were planted in July, and will finish in good shape. Flower yields should be very good this year.
Overall, we are looking at a very productive harvest this year.
