Q&A
What Web sites are beneficial in helping to understand the potential weather outlook?

Weather plays such a critical role for those involved in farming. There can be too much rain or too little rain. The wind can blow for days and prevent pesticide applications. Any weather factor can determine success or failure in a daily work schedule, a pesticide application or a tillage practice. For a farmer, knowing what the weather will do on a daily basis is very important. Knowing the long term outlook also is critical for determining planting rates, dates and even the selection of the crop itself.

Listed below are some weather Web sites that may be beneficial in having a better understanding of both short-term and long-term forecasts:

Weather Underground is a very good (free or inexpensive) site for local and regional radar and forecasts. It also gives an indication of total precipitation from a current storm.

Drought Monitor is excellent for viewing the severity of long-term droughts.

Drought Outlook shows a drought outlook forecast over a period of several months.

National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center has a number of products that are interesting and beneficial.

There are numerous other weather-related sites that may be beneficial that can be searched or that may be linked to one of these sites. Look around the Internet for the sites that offer you the benefits you need for your farming operation.
