Cotton Producers Watch for Freeze
Cotton producers in northern Texas aren’t quite ready to defoliate, but are watching for the freeze.

“We’re just not gaining any heat units to move the cotton along,” notes Kyle Aljoe, Area Manager for Crop Quest, based in Dimmit, Texas. “We are progressing slowly, but it’s just a matter of timing. If we defoliate too soon, it would hurt the grade of the cotton.”

Aljoe says that area producers haven’t missed the opportune timing for defoliation yet, but if the crop doesn’t mature soon, many producers may skip defoliation and use boll openers to make sure their crop can be harvested.
